{"id":626,"date":"2019-08-02T12:58:37","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T12:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/?p=626"},"modified":"2025-02-25T20:47:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T20:47:24","slug":"ironman-lake-placid-7-28-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/racereportblog.com\/?p=626","title":{"rendered":"Ironman Lake Placid, 7\/28\/19"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-687\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-687 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0033.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of Mirror Lake from Summit Hotel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ok, settle in, it\u2019s an Ironman\u00ae.\u00a0 Took a long time to do it (spoiler alert, a very long time \u2013 that\u2019s the good, bad and ugly).<\/p>\n<p>It takes a village to race an Ironman.\u00a0 Not just the Ironman Village of vendors galore (I got suckered into buying some lens-cleaning snake oil), but all the people who got me to the starting line and through the finish line.\u00a0 My wife <strong>Rachel<\/strong>, of course \u2013 for whom I tried to minimize my year-long chatter of training and concerns.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t come with me to upstate New York for excellent reasons:\u00a0 she had to teach until 2 pm on Friday, and we had to pick up registration by 5 pm on Friday; <em>and<\/em> Rachel won Best Director of a high school play by the\u00a0 National Youth Arts Awards, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalyouththeatre.com\/news\/news_nya_awards2019_eastern_evening.asp#awards\">http:\/\/www.nationalyouththeatre.com\/news\/news_nya_awards2019_eastern_evening.asp#awards<\/a><\/u>, for her production of <em>Laramie Project, <\/em>and her cast won a number of awards as well, and her awards ceremony was on\u2026 race day!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-679\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0041.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-679 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0041-181x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel, getting her award for Best Director of high school drama, for &#8220;The Laramie Project.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_680\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-680\" style=\"width: 381px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-680 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0040-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"286\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel with Ruby and Lior, winners of supporting actors and part of Best Ensemble<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A lot of other people got me to the starting line:\u00a0 in the weeks before, my <strong>Mom and Dad<\/strong> (\u201cbe careful, please\u201d) and my sisters <strong>Jean and Louise<\/strong> (\u201cwe are so proud of you\u201d) and <strong>Dom Chiaverini<\/strong> (who was with me when I fell and got scraped up running on the aqueduct, \u201cyou are ready for this, man\u201d). And training runs with <strong>Zander<\/strong> or <strong>Dietmar<\/strong>. A pep talk from <strong>Coach Debi Bernardes<\/strong> at a rest stop during the 4 \u00bd hour drive. And I also called and chatted with cousin <strong>Rob Falk<\/strong> (\u201cI dunno, I feel totally relaxed and not ready to tear up and conquer the race\u201d; Rob:\u00a0 \u201cSounds like you\u2019re experienced, now.\u201d), and <strong>Jason Santarcangelo<\/strong> (\u201cIt\u2019s a fast swim, because Mirror Lake is so small that the swimmers actually create a current\u2026\u201d), and total strangers, <strong>Mark and Becky<\/strong> from western Mass who talked with me during Friday\u2019s dinner on the patio of The Dancing Bears (the mac and cheese didn\u2019t have truffle oil as advertised, but I\u2019m avoiding any negative thinking, and it\u2019s <em>still <\/em>mac and cheese\u2026).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_689\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-689\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-689 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0016-e1564757975658-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Friday night dinner: Ambrosia and nectar of the gods.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And what a blessing literally to walk into <strong>Greg Bassett<\/strong> while strolling into town on Saturday who took me out to lunch (\u201cYeah, leave your car parked just off Main Street overnight\u201d)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-681\" style=\"width: 1543px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-681 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0043-e1564757886752.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1543\" height=\"1157\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With Greg Bassett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>and right after, get a text from <strong>Bill Logan<\/strong>, who was visiting and having lunch in the restaurant across the street, and who took me in his classic car to drive the bike course.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_685\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-685\" style=\"width: 3087px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-685 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0021-1-e1564758045839.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3087\" height=\"2319\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With Bill Logan, AIA and bicycle design innovator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-693\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_0024Edited.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-693 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_0024Edited-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bill Logan&#8217;s classic little Toyota<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And all their emails from the gang from the <strong>NY Sports Club breakfast club<\/strong>.\u00a0 So even though I came to Lake Placid without anyone else, I didn\u2019t feel alone.<\/p>\n<p>I was especially \u201ceager\u201d about the swim (avoiding words like \u201canxious\u201d because I was trying to avoid negative thinking\u2026):\u00a0 despite my form feeling good and pain-free, my recent workouts had been exhausting and slow.\u00a0 Ten days before the race, had a lesson with <strong>Joe E. <\/strong>at<strong> Swimlabs<\/strong> in Elmsford, and we found the silver bullet:\u00a0 slow down my cadence, reach farther to engage the lats and pull stronger, and everything became faster and easier.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-686\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0031-e1564779937654.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-686 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0031-e1564779937654-1024x977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"630\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mirror Lake, view from the red turnaround buoys<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Swam 20 minutes of the course on Friday after registration, had dinner; slept 9 hours Friday night, and <strong>Kenneth Ruterbois<\/strong> (who took 4th place OA at IM Wisconsin 12 years ago) later said \u201coh, if you got 9 hours sleep, you could not sleep at all on Saturday and be fine for the race\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday morning, swam for 15 minutes from the side of the lake near my supposedly 3-star Summit Hotel, rode for 15 minutes, and ran for 6 minutes (because the free pancake breakfast was almost over\u2026). And racked my bike.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_694\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-694\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_0019-e1564780156488.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-694 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_0019-e1564780156488-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My beast, resting before the race. Recovery is so important for all of us&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 509px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0025-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"382\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bicycles, as far as the eye can see<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Saturday night I went to bed around 8:45 pm; sure enough, woke up at 12:22 a.m., and didn\u2019t fall back asleep before the alarm went off at 3:15 a.m.\u00a0 Kenneth\u2019s advice gave me solace.\u00a0 Had my Bullet Proof\u00ae-style coffee, two eggs, half a Sunbutter\u00ae and honey sandwich, prepped my whey protein plus Ucan\u00ae starch drink for sipping on the walk over and my Skratch\u00ae sodium drink for just before leaving transition and another sandwich\u2026 nutritionist <strong>Dina Griffin <\/strong>had prepped me well.\u00a0 A little after 4:30, checked and added some dry Skratch and my lucky Ironman Mt. Tremblant hat into my plastic Run Bag and Bike Bag, hanging from racks with our bib numbers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-683\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-683 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_0020-e1564780228919-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Run and bike transition bags, waiting for race day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found a new friend having trouble with his pump and then pumped my tires (avoiding a 20-30 minute wait for the mechanics\u2026); filled my bento box on the bike with nutrition.\u00a0 Left transition before 6 a.m. to get on a long, long line for the portable toilets (both athletes and spectators, but we all feared how long the line might be for 2,800 of us down by Mirror Lake).<\/p>\n<p>Walked down to the lake, put on the full wetsuit, splashed around for 5-10 minutes and rushed out for another potty break just as the pros start the race, finishing just in time to squeeze into the crowd on the beach for the \u201cfirst\u201d wave of swimmers, as the second wave was for those expecting to take 1:30 hours or more to finish\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I had been swimming what would translate to 1:18 finish for the swim, and Debi said to seed myself for a 1:13 finish, so I jump into the 1:10 to 1:20 corral and work my way towards the front\u2026<\/p>\n<p>And in we go! For the first time, in less than 100 yards, I\u2019m in a groove, and of course I\u2019m drafting off one, two guys in front of me and there\u2019s someone grabbing my leg and I\u2019m bumping arms and trying to avoid being kicked when suddenly a miracle happens:\u00a0 I find myself on top of the cable that connects the buoys, in a straight line.\u00a0 Sure, others are jostling to get there (interesting, the women find clean water slightly off to the left, it\u2019s not worth the trouble; and the men are much more aggressive, really pushing to get the perfect fastest course), but I\u2019m an attorney by day and I can be pretty aggressive too. So I\u2019m not shaken off this line, I pull past the guys that are insisting on staying in my path, I swim <em>under <\/em>the twelve big pyramid sight buoys, twice feeling caught under the boat-like things (a little panic and leg cramping), and my arms swing around and over the little yellow ball buoys, but I don\u2019t need to lift my head to sight for the next buoy and I never swerve off the path!\u00a0 And I see the guys around me with their fast and furious cadences and think to myself, \u201cthat\u2019s not my style anymore,\u201d I am grabbing bushels full of water and finishing the stroke and feeling unstoppable and relaxed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-665\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Swim-out-31058198.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-665\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Swim-out-31058198-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We reach the shore, only to cross the mat to note our time, then back for a second 1.2 mile loop.<span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: 'Noto Serif', serif; font-size: 17px;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: 'Noto Serif', serif; font-size: 17px;\">Sure, when we get out and run across the beach for the second loop, I\u2019m more tired, and feel I\u2019m slower, but it\u2019s over so fast, and ultimately it\u2019s the same speed as my Ironman race at Mt. Tremblant, 4 years ago:\u00a0 1:11.\u00a0 Solid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Swim-Out-2.31058213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-663\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Swim-Out-2.31058213-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-664\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/swim-out-3.31058231.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-664\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/swim-out-3.31058231-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I just finished the swim!&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_631\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-631\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Bike.start_.descent-out-of-town.31058253.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-631 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Bike.start_.descent-out-of-town.31058253-e1564800277641-899x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"752\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The descent out of T1 and onto the course!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>T1 in sub-9:00, including the run through main street carrying the wetsuit that a volunteer had stripped off me, grabbing bag of Bike Gear and putting on shoes and helmet and visor, slathered with sunscreen, then run down the aisle to the bike \u2013 second to last row, second from end, a prime spot\u2014and out the door, WHOOP!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Side-view-bike-B-31058177.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-660\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Side-view-bike-B-31058177-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a>Feeling great through mile 35 or 40. The descents into Keene are fast and thrilling.\u00a0 The ascents take a lot out of me, even though I was in a pretty low gear, but I start to feel I don\u2019t have sufficient leg strength.\u00a0 Wished I had done more leg presses and other weight lifting.<\/p>\n<p>About 1:40 into the bike, I take a pit stop &#8211; ah, this changing body! And I\u2019m too well toilet-trained to pee while riding &#8230; I mess with my Garmin to take it off auto-pause, but I screw it up and have to stop and start the watch. Whereupon the helpful device advises me \u201c[Take] 11 Hours [for] Recovery\u201d.\u00a0 Ha!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Front-descending-bike.31058181.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-641\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Front-descending-bike.31058181-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a> First the more elite age group athletes, then other people pass me, on the hills as planned (Debi said to take it easy, and maybe I can go slower, but not much slower; I\u2019m taking the hills in the small ring and 2nd gear on the cassette, sometimes the\u00a0 1st gear). Tired at the start of second loop (though thrilled to see Greg Bassett again, waiting for me with special needs bag \u2013 and I\u2019m flooded with emotion, I\u2019m really not alone at this race, not just Greg but everyone else who\u2019s watching me on the tracker app and the crowd is amazing (one spectator: \u201cLook at this guy!\u00a0 He\u2019s actually smiling!\u201d))<\/p>\n<p>But I couldn\u2019t eat more than a bite of the sandwich, the honey instead of jam that had tasted great for breakfast now tasted way too dry (even though Dina and I had planned on the sandwich as big source of calories &#8211; more UCAN next time, if there ever is a next time?).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/side-view-bike.uphill-mountains.31058243.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-661\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/side-view-bike.uphill-mountains.31058243-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a>More pass me on the second loop (everyone seeming to be 44 years old) more and more heaviness in legs on the hills. Decent turnover but not great.\u00a0 At mile 85 it suddenly drizzles, then pours for 5-10 minutes, but we\u2019re going uphill so it\u2019s not dangerously fast and slippery and feels terrific.\u00a0 <strong>Dan Ostrowski<\/strong>, a younger guy from Kansas City (whose last name I learn because he\u2019s miraculously in the video montage they show at the awards ceremony the next day) is leapfrogging with me, and tells me I\u2019m looking strong, and I pick up the cadence, and he says \u201cTHAT\u2019s what I\u2019m talking about.\u201d\u00a0 Man, does that help.\u00a0 Temp is in the 80s but I don\u2019t feel overly hot inside the helmet visor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bike.sideview.aero_.31058254.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-630\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bike.sideview.aero_.31058254-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a>But at about mile 85 or 90, I start feeling queasy.\u00a0 Poetically, just as I start to unravel, the tape unravels on one of my handlebars. By mile 90 I\u2019m accepting that I am not going to do match the 6-hour ride I did in Mt. Tremblant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Bike.banking-at-end-of-first-loop.31058250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Bike.banking-at-end-of-first-loop.31058250-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a>Finally, I\u2019m finishing the 112-mile ride. Less cheering (other than the fiercely loyal TriLatino crowd, waiting for their teammates) &#8212; almost hitting the curb at the hairpin turn just before getting back into town. Yep, I\u2019m tired. I later learn (because I\u2019m only looking at the watch for feeding times) that I finish in 6:33 = 16.7 mph average, slower than I had expected, but all that I could do today.<\/p>\n<p>I take over 11 minutes for T2, between putting on shoes, learning that passion fruit-flavored Skratch drink that\u2019s been in the sun doesn\u2019t just get hot, it FERMENTS (so I dump it and make another flask of the stuff with the powder I brought as backup), going out for sunscreen, going back for another bathroom break&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I start the run.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Leaving-t2.31058192-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-648\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Leaving-t2.31058192-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a> Debi said I was required, which now felt \u201callowed,\u201d to run in zone 1 HR for the first 4 mile. Copyright 2019 Greg Bassett.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And I suddenly remember that I\u2019m part of the Hastings High School science project of <strong>Ali Manly<\/strong>, who has those of us in the <strong>Hastings Running Group<\/strong> reporting our average cadence, so I try to pick up my cadence on the second loop (not speed, just number of steps) and damn, it feels better and sustainable.\u00a0 I still keep stopping at every rest stop, indulging in water and fruit and a pretzel (ugh! So dry!) and coke (ugh! So bubbly!), and maybe I could minimize the stops and shave off 15 minutes from what is looking like much more than the 4-hour marathon I had wanted but walking feels so good&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Run.looking-worried.31058246.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-658 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Run.looking-worried.31058246-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back to the higher cadence \u201crun\u201d, and there\u2019s a younger guy lying on his back on the outbound side who sits up as I pass him, on the way back there\u2019s a guy around 50 sprawled on his stomach and they\u2019re getting him an ambulance, and some white-haired guy a little later on a stretcher&#8230; so, maybe my \u201cgiving in\u201d to what my body can do today is the smartest thing I\u2019ve done in a while. At the turnaround, the heavy guy sitting in a chair says \u201cyou have to finish this run in 5 \u00bd hours\u201d, and I misunderstand him:\u00a0 I think that whenever we start the run, we have only 5 \u00bd hours, later realizing he meant that\u2019s how long we have until midnight, but it inspires me to walk less and run more because if I walk the whole way I might not make what I think is the cutoff and, hey, it would be nice to finish in less than 5 hours, I can do that I think.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/run.getting-tough-up-hill-through-town.31058258.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-657\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/run.getting-tough-up-hill-through-town.31058258-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a>And I\u2019m walking the long hill by the ski jump, and on the hill into town some spectator says \u201cthis hill can\u2019t beat you\u201d and I say \u201cthat\u2019s why I\u2019m walking it, I\u2019m in control of this hill\u201d and there\u2019s the out and back along Mirror Lake where I had thought my swim was going to make for a great race and the downhill towards the 1980 Olympic speed skating oval is glorious and I\u2019m in the shoot and cross the last beeping sensor (there\u2019s been one virtually every mile to make sure we don\u2019t cheat!) and the famous Ironman announcer Mike Reilly calls out those roaring words, \u201cMark Kaufman of Hastings on Hudson, New York:\u00a0 You.\u00a0 Are. An. Ironman!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/finish-1.31058263.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-634 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/finish-1.31058263-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Finish-2.31058264-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-635\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Finish-2.31058264-2-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/finish-4.-31058267.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-637\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/finish-4.-31058267-684x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"803\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t even look at my results until I talk with Rachel, over an hour later (after sitting in the athlete eating area, staring into space and gathering strength to get my stuff up to my car \u2013 safely parked a few blocks away, but up up up a hill next to the Crown Plaza Hotel).<\/p>\n<p>And I finally learn my final time:\u00a0 13:03. The run in 4:58.\u00a0 Not what I planned, not what I wanted, but I realized:\u00a0 I just completed an Ironman. AND I\u2019m 25\/172 for my AG, and suddenly delighted. He came in 45 minutes <em>after<\/em> me at this race. When I saw that, I realized: he\u2019s a great athlete (man, watching him run at me in May, returning from the out and back &#8230;) but he was set back by this tough course and the heat, too. And, just recognizing that even top competitors, my peers, are humbled at this race, that makes me feel better. Tough course, we\u2019re getting older, we do what we can.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FInish.with-time-stamp.31058160.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-639\" src=\"http:\/\/www.racereportblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FInish.with-time-stamp.31058160-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"992\" \/><\/a>Next race, I want to approach the triathlon like I approach playing saxophone:\u00a0 \u00a0it feels amazing to make music.\u00a0 I want to be thrilled to be racing and pour my heart into it and leave nothing behind on the course.
